Professionalism

According to the Alabama Continuum for Teacher Development, the purpose of professionalism as a quality teaching standard is "to increase the achievement of all students, teachers engage in continuous learning and self-improvement; collaborate with colleagues to create and adopt research-based best practices to achieve ongoing classroom and school improvement; and adhere to the Alabama Educator Code of Ethics and federal, state, and local laws and policies." Many documents found elsewhere in this portfolio support the collaborative aspect of professionalism, so included below are documents which support the continuous learning and policies adherence aspects.

Active in Education

One dreaded aspect of teaching is the government's involvement. For educators in public school systems, the government and politicians play a huge role in how their classroom is operated everyday. In order to maintain some control and responsibility, teachers should become active citizens and stay informed about the latest in politics.

Below is an example of how I played an active role in informing myself about the latest in government policies. In the first document, I analyzed my selected issue (the proposed Alabama Senate Bill #14 of 2019 which would allow a Bible Education class to be taught to grades 6-12) and reflected on my own experiences and what the issue meant to me. The next image is of the poster I created to display my standpoint on the issue.
